Within the chapter a distinction is drawn between offences relating to sexual penetration of another without their consent (rape, attempted rape and assault with intent to rape) and other serious sexual assaults.

Brendan Butler

Brendan Butler AM SC
BA LLB, LLM (University of Queensland)

Admitted as a barrister in 1976, Brendan was appointed Senior Counsel in 1994.

In 1998, Brendan was appointed Chairperson of the Criminal Justice Commission and then the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

Brendan returned to the Bar in 2004 and in 2008 was appointed Chief Magistrate and a Judge of the District Court of Queensland.

After completing five years as Chief Magistrate he now sits as a District Court Judge. Judge Butler was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006.

Saul Holt

Saul Holt QC
BA LLB, LLM (Hons) (Auckland University)

Saul was a Crown Prosecutor in New Zealand for nine years and was appointed Senior Crown Counsel in 2005.

In 2008, Saul was responsible for the development of the Criminal Procedure Act 2009 (Vic).

Between 2009 and 2013, Saul was the Director of Criminal Law at Victoria Legal Aid and then VLA's first Chief Counsel.

In 2012, Saul was appointed Senior Counsel and a Victorian Law Reform Commissioner.

In January 2014, Saul moved permanently to Brisbane and now practises at the Bar in Queensland and Victoria.
