Description

Jowitt’s Dictionary of English Law is the authoritative dictionary of English law, defining legal terms used in the law of England and Wales, both old and new. It provides clarity on the meaning of words and phrases when drafting, interpreting and understanding legal materials, and is an essential starting point for legal research into unfamiliar legal concepts.

The 7th edition has been fully revised to reflect recent legislation, case law and structural developments in the courts. Core and niche terms have been updated and added to, helping readers keep pace with developing legal language and modern legal practice.

Jowitt is a dictionary rather than an encyclopaedia: its purpose is to explain the meaning of the terms that form the structure of the law, rather than to summarise the substantive law on every topic. It remains especially valuable because it combines contemporary legal terminology with historical legal terms, helping users understand both current legal usage and the historical context of legal language.

The work is intended to serve as a companion to Stroud’s Judicial Dictionary. While Stroud records words and phrases that have been defined by judicial dictum or legislative provision, Jowitt provides authoritative definitions of technical legal concepts and expressions forming part of the mechanism of English law.

New to this edition:

  • Fully updated to reflect recent legislation, case law and structural developments in the courts, including the reorganisation of the High Court.
  • Covers key recent Acts such as the Arbitration Act 2025, the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 and the House of Lords (Hereditary Peers) Act 2026.
  • Adds and updates definitions for emerging and developing legal concepts, including beneficial ownership, electronic trade documents, digital assets, unfair commercial practices and visitor levies.
  • Retains Jowitt’s distinctive coverage of historic legal terminology while bringing the work up to date for modern legal practice and research.
